Teacher Education Program

Welcome to the virtual office of the Teacher Education Program!

In addition to the “real world” office, we have added our virtual department!

Mission Statement

Teachers have an ethical obligation to teach students how to use professional learning communities effectively. At MSU we have the same responsibility to model for our future teachers how to navigate these new interactive environments. As a result, please read the CoP Professional Learning Community Code of Conduct and indicate that you agree that you are willing to abide by this code:

Welcome to the Teacher Education Admissions and Retention Department

The Teacher Education Admissions & Retention Department oversees admissions, retention, and program completion for undergraduate and graduate students in the Teacher Education Program. We are dedicated to preparing knowledgeable and committed teachers who develop a set of strong commitments to equity and diversity, critical thinking, social responsibility, and critical reflection. We believe that instilling teachers with such attitudes and dispositions, found in the Portrait of a Teacher, lays the foundation for sustaining a political and social democracy.

As a result, in making decisions about admission to the Program, the Portrait is used as a guideline in order to select students whose commitments match those of the Program. The Portrait is also used for ongoing assessment of students as they progress through the Program.

Montclair State University's Teacher Education Program has been continually accredited by the National Council for Accreditation in Teacher Education (NCATE) since 1954 and is affiliated with national networks committed to the simultaneous renewal of P-12 schools and teacher education. Upon successful completion of the Program, students are recommended to the New Jersey Department of Education for certification.

A good way to review for the Praxis II is to actually take it online before your scheduled test...for free!

Review of Full Length Practice Tests for Elementary Education: Content Knowledge (0014) and Early Childhood Education: Content Knowledge (0022)

Go to the Newark Public Library website. You don't have to be a resident of Newark to access them, though you will have to sign up for an account. It doesn't cost anything!

Here is how to access the P-3 (0022) and K-5 (0014) Praxis II tests:

Go to the Newark Public Library home page: www.npl.org
Click on “Internet and Electronic Resources” in upper left corner of page
Click on “Test Preparation” (last one in the list of databases)
Click on “Learning Express Library”
Create a User Account (click “Register” under New Users)
Click on “Jobs and Careers” (in blue on left of page)
Click on “Teaching” (bottom of list)
Click on “Praxis II preparation”
Click on the test you want to take.

This resource allows you to take a timed test that will be scored. It will allow you to go back and see what you got right and wrong, and what the correct answers are.
